NAMM Oral History:

“Ravenwood ukuleles are now recognized for their unique approach, allowing players to explore music freely without concern for wrong notes.”

One Key. Infinite Music.

Ravenwood builds string instruments designed entirely in a single key. Every note belongs, so everything you play naturally harmonizes. The key can be changed by tuning up or down, giving you flexibility without complexity.

This design makes music effortless. Beginners sound great from the first strum, jam sessions stay perfectly in sync, and experienced players can explore new sounds without worrying about wrong notes. Slides stay in key, melodies flow smoothly, and experimentation always sounds musical.

Not Just for Beginners

The Ravenwood Ukey is approachable enough for first-time players, but it is not limited to beginner use.

Experienced musicians can use it for improvisation, songwriting, sliding melodies, layered recordings, drone-style textures, group jams, and creative exploration. Because every fretboard note belongs to the key, players can focus less on avoiding wrong notes and more on rhythm, feel, phrasing, and sound.

It is a simple instrument with real creative depth.

F.A.Q.

Can I change the key?

Yes. You can tune the instrument up or down to shift the key. For example, tuning every string up a half step raises the instrument by a half step, and tuning every string down a half step lowers it by a half step.

Can I use a capo?

Yes, but a capo does not change the instrument’s built-in key structure the way retuning does. Because the fretboard is designed around one key, a capo creates a new arrangement within that layout rather than transposing.

Capos don’t change the key—they create new arrangements within it. Songs in any key are seamlessly pulled into the instrument’s scale, keeping everything cohesive and expressive.

Can multiple Ukeys play together?

Yes. This is one of the strongest uses for the instrument. Because the notes are designed to work together, multiple players can jam, create rhythms, trade melodies, and build layered parts while staying musically connected.

Is it good for classrooms?

Yes. The one-key fretboard makes it easier for groups to play together, which is useful for classrooms, camps, workshops, homeschool groups, and beginner ensembles. Students can focus on rhythm, picking, strumming, scales, and musical expression without being overwhelmed at the start.

Do I need to know music theory to play it?

No. You can begin by exploring the fretboard, strumming, sliding, and listening. As you grow, the Ukey can also help you understand scales, rhythm, phrasing, harmony, and improvisation.

How the One-Key Fretboard Works

The Ravenwood Ukey uses a selective fretboard layout built around one key, so the available notes naturally work together.

That means you can move around the fretboard, create melodies, slide between notes, and experiment freely while staying musical.
